SWLCA-veterans-dayMrs. Jo Collins, Reading Interventionist at Southwest Louisiana Charter Academy, is the spouse of Lake Area veteran, 72-year old Chester Collins, who was recently contacted by a pen pal he wrote to more than fifty years ago while stationed in Germany. Chester Collins was able to receive copies of the letters and his story was shared with teachers, students, and parents at the Veterans Day Program at Southwest Louisiana Charter Academy. Specifics from the program included kindergarten and first grade students who performed songs of thanks to veterans. Students in grades two through eighth with winning essays were able to present at each of the two programs to parents, veterans, students, and staff. A video was also presented by clips of students articulating, “What Does a Veteran Mean to You?” An army general also made a speech to students with the history of Veterans Day and the meaning of the 11th month of the year, 11th day of the month, and the 11th hour of the day, which is when WWI officially ended.
